FAQ:  Frequently Asked Questions about the Aiko & Egor: Animation 4 Autism App

  • When should I use the play video viewing option?
You should use the play video option to watch the entire episode all the way through or choose a particular scene from the episode, without embedded pauses for learning opportunities.  This feature is intended for the entire family to watch together or is appropriate for a child to watch independently or with closely aged siblings or peers.  Learn more.

  • How do I use Learn Together feature?
An adult (or mature teenage sibling) and child watch the Aiko & Egor content with “Bubble Times” (paused learning opportunities) embedded at specific moments throughout the animation. During each Bubble Time, the video pauses, and a menu pops up that presents instructions for the learning moment.  The adult then follows the instructions to facilitate the learning moment in real time outside of the app.  Then the adult can either replay the character’s previous action or continue playing the video.  Before the animation restarts parents, therapists, or other adults then answer a quick survey question about how the child responded to track progress.   Learn more.

  • What if my child already imitates the video a few times without support?
Good news!  Continue to practice the skill in natural, everyday situations without the app to strengthen the child's mastery of the skill and continue to watch the Aiko & Egor videos to reinforce appropriate behavior.

  • Will See Beneath make videos or tools for older children?
Absolutely!  See Beneath's Board of Directors' long-term goals include creating new products that are appropriate for their child as they age.  If you have feedback about Aiko & Egor or ideas of other tools that would benefit your family, please contact info@seebeneath.org

  • Are their child locks to protect my child from going onto the internet or using the Learn Together feature without me?
Yes, the user must answer questions in order to access the Learn Together features or to access links to the Internet.  We do recommend that parents are always nearby their children while they are using tablets or smartphones.

  • My child loves songs, is it okay to use the song to provide reinforcement for other tasks not associated with the video?
Sure, we encourage parents to use the videos in whatever ways best support their children.

  • My child needs extensive help with a skill targeted one video in particular, is it okay to watch the same videos multiple times?
Of course!  If the skill is particularly challenging for the child, remember to intersperse skills that your child has already mastered with the new and more difficult skill.  Learn More.

  • How does See Beneath know that the skills including in Aiko & Egor are appropriate for children with ASD?
See Beneath’s co-founders have years of experience in autism research and intervention from the University of California, San Diego, the Autism Center of Excellence, and the Claremont Autism Center.

Aiko & Egor uses a developmentally appropriate modified curriculum based on the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM; Rogers & Dawson, 2010) and Strategies for Teaching based on ASD Research (STAR; Arick, Loos, Falco, & Krug, 2004).

The content and targeted skills increase in developmental complexity throughout the first season.

See Beneath is looking for parents of young children with ASD in the San Diego and Los Angeles area to participate in a focus group about the app, please contact Gerin Gaskin at gerin@seebeneath.org if you are interested.
